CBW’S WOMEN OF THE WORLD RECIPIENT:

INEZ N. CLAGGETT

BIOGRAPHY

As a champion of change at an early age, Inez created an advocacy effort that encouraged her fellow high school classmates to conduct a letter-writing campaign to re-install after school activity buses. She spoke before her entire high school community to disrupt an unorganized student walkout, to bring about an advocacy effort that led to student success. This effort solidified her desire and passion for advocacy and community service and began the growth of her courageous spirit to speak for others.

Inez was appointed to the Calvert County Board of Education (Board) in 2019, and in 2020 won her first 4-year term on the Board where she currently serves as Vice President. As a first-year Board Member, Inez championed policy changes to restrict the use of restraint and seclusion within Calvert County Public Schools, with a vision toward abolishing the use of seclusion. Her leadership fortitude catapulted her into positions as Board Vice President in 2019 and 2022 and Board President in 2020 and 2023. In 2021 the Maryland State Educators Association awarded Inez their Minority Recognition Award for Leadership.

Inez is a servant leader who has volunteered in various capacities within the Calvert County community. She is a charter member of the National Coalition for 100 Black Women, Inc., Southern Maryland Chapter, and the Financial Secretary for the Southern Maryland Chain (MD) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. She has held membership and leadership roles within the Calvert County Democratic Womens’ Club, the Calvert County Commission for Women, the Calvert County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, the Concerned Black Women of Calvert County, the League of Women Voters of Calvert County, the Calvert County Minority Business Alliance, and several local youth sports organizations. Inez served on the Calvert County Board of Education’s Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) for five years prior to becoming a Board Member. In this capacity, she became interested in becoming a catalyst for change within the School System.

Inez has extensive knowledge and skills in public service, auditing, budgeting, internal controls, and policy development. She has been a public servant for over twenty (20) years and is currently the Director of Finance for a local legislature. She holds certifications in public sector auditing, internal controls, and risk management, and earned her masters degree in accounting and financial management from the University of Maryland Global Campus (College Park, MD). Prior to, she earned her bachelors degree at the University of Delaware (Newark, DE). Inez graduated from Anne Arundel County Public Schools but has long and deep familial roots within Calvert County.
